New Virtual Catwalk Extracted From Archive Fashion Footage Using AI

The FIA team collaborated with an extraordinary group of LCF students to create a virtual fashion show. The catwalk was created from archive LCF show footage, which was placed in different 3D environments with models wearing new 3D-generated and animated garments.

As a pivotal output of the AI course, students at LCF experimented with AI, 3D Design & Animation to generate new and inspiring digital showcasing ways within fashion.

OpenPose was used to detect skeletal movement data from archive video footage, which was then turned into a 3D pose simulation that allowed the team to animate purely digital avatars in Blender based on the initial footage's movement details. CLO3D was used to design and animate the 3D garments and style transfer allowed the application of additional detail to the clothes, including pattern and texture information. The virtual fashion show was brought together in Unity, where the digital models were imported, and FIA's 3D Designer created immersive, animated environments. “Initial uses of Artificial Intelligence have focused on quantifiable business needs, which has allowed for start-ups to offer a service to brands... Creativity is much more difficult to quantify and therefore more likely to follow behind.”

"The students hadn’t coded before and were from a wide range of courses, including pattern cutting (for garment construction) and fashion curation.  Despite being complete beginners learning Python, when they understood the technical capabilities of AI they were able to thrive.”
