Lightweight Virtual Production: Soft Body, Hard World

Lightweight virtual production pipeline integrating marker-free tracking for mobile, cinematic workflows.
An original research project by the Fashion Innovation Agency and Tamaris Ellins, Soft Body, Hard World maps an accessible workflow for mobile virtual production. Captured entirely on iPhone using Lightcraft JetSet, it merges real-time compositing, tracking, and depth capture into a seamless on-set process, showing how consumer hardware supports professional visual pipelines.

Mobile virtual production merges live-action capture, real-time compositing, and digital environments for flexible, hybrid cinematic workflows.
Developed as part of FIA’s immersive technology research, Soft Body, Hard World explores how lightweight, mobile tools enable ambitious visual outcomes. The film moves between tactile styling and hyper-textural 3D: reflective planes, soft fabrics, and glitching digital space merging into one composited scene. Combining real-time virtual production with post-processing, the project examines efficient, adaptive workflows linking live capture with flexible 3D and editing environments.
Accessible tools and advanced aesthetics combine tactile materials with mobile virtual production for innovative, responsive filmmaking.
Through Soft Body, Hard World, Tamaris Ellins, Immersive Technology Intern at FIA, demonstrates how accessible hardware and emerging virtual production tools can transform creative workflows. By uniting live compositing, marker-free tracking, and depth capture within a mobile framework, the project positions virtual production as a space where tactile materials and digital systems merge seamlessly.
